Keratoconus & Scleral Lenses
Clearer Vision When the Cornea Is Irregular
What is Keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a condition in which the cornea becomes thinner and gradually changes from a rounded shape to
a more irregular, cone-like shape. Because the cornea helps focus light, these changes can cause blurry or
distorted vision.
Patients may experience frequent prescription changes, glare or halos around lights, light sensitivity, and difficulty achieving clear vision with glasses or standard soft contact lenses. Regular monitoring is important because keratoconus can change over time.
How Can Scleral Lenses Help?
Scleral lenses are large-diameter rigid gas-permeable lenses that rest primarily on the white part of the eye, called the sclera.
The lens vaults over the irregular cornea and creates a smooth optical surface that can improve the quality of vision for many patients with keratoconus.

The Fluid Reservoir
Before insertion, the scleral lens is filled with sterile saline. When placed on the eye, the fluid remains between the lens and cornea. This reservoir helps create a smooth optical surface while providing continuous hydration to the corneal surface during wear.
Benefits of Scleral Lens Vision Correction
- Improved visual clarity — A smooth optical surface can reduce visual distortion caused by an irregular cornea.
- Customized fit — Each lens can be designed based on the individual shape and measurements of your eye.
- Ocular surface hydration — The fluid reservoir helps maintain moisture over the corneal surface.
- Comfort — Because the lens vaults over the cornea, it avoids direct contact with the central corneal surface.
Your Vision is Unique. Your Lenses Should Be Too.
Successful scleral lens fitting requires detailed evaluation and measurements. Corneal topography can help us understand the shape of your cornea and select an appropriate lens design.
At Vision Source Coral Springs, we provide personalized evaluation and fitting for patients with keratoconus and
other irregular corneal conditions.
